There are 20 children in Aire Class. Eight in Year 11 and 9 in Reception. We make self-initiated learning a focus for the younger children, with the older ones starting a more formal curriculum. Believing that the Early Years provide the ideal opportunity to develop basic skills and concepts, all the children take part in daily phonics learning in small, adult-led groups. We aim to make these fun and engaging for the children through the use of games, including ICT.
Both Literacy and Mathematics activities are enriched by a wide range of practical activities such as using our wonderful local environment, gardening and cooking activities. We are lucky to have the support of members of the community who visit us and let us visit them! For example, during 18 – 19 school year we visited a local tin-mine, woods, farmers’ market and beach. We have received visits from the vicar, and from a farmer with a chicken!
As a teacher, I have always been interested in new ways of extending children’s learning, such as working with artists, using the outside environment (Beach School!), and initiating challenging activities. I have a B.A. (Hons) in English from Bristol University, did a school-based PGCE with the Open University and completed a Master of Education degree with Exeter University in 2009. I have worked in various schools in Cornwall, preferring the smaller community village school, of which Sennen School is such a wonderful example! Out of school, I enjoy walking the coast path and in the mountains, gardening and attending various local concerts and plays.
