Phonics

When children start with us, they will be having daily phonics sessions to support them with learning to read and write.

Letters and sounds follows 'phases' which allow the children build on their knowledge and skills. During their time at pre-school, they would have had some exposure to 'Phase 1' which underpins the rest of their learning. 
 
Phase 1 has 7 aspects:
 
Aspect 1: Environmantal sounds
 
  • Play 'Getting nearer' – hide a toy and then sing louder the nearer your child gets to the toy or quieter the further away they go.
  • Make a shaker
  • Talk about favourite sounds
  • Make animal noises
  • Listening Walk

Aspect 2: Instrumental Sounds 
 
  • Play musical instruments
  • Add sounds to stories when reading or telling a story

Aspect 3: Body percussion Sounds
 
  • Sing action songs
  • Play follow my leader with movements such as clapping, tapping or stamping
  • Made loud, quiet, slow and fast sounds and discuss them

Aspect 4: Rhythm and Rhyme
 
  • Read books that rhyme
  • Sing nursery rhymes and let the child finish the line
  • Copy rhythms and beats
  • I know a word that rhymes with cat

Aspect 5: Alliteration
 
  • Play I spy
  • Say 'A tall tin of tomatoes' or other sentences where most words begin with the same sound.  This is called alliteration. Use names eg Milo makes music.
  • Teach the children tongue twisters eg Peter Piper picked a piece of pickled pepper
  • Play 'What do we have in here?' Put some toys in a bag and pull them out saying the name of the toy and emphasising the first sound eg car cccccc

Aspect 6: Voice Sounds
 
  • Make different sounds and noises with your voice
  • Sing songs

Aspect 7: Blending
 
  • Encourage your child to try sound talking
  • Play I spy but sound talking eg I spy a d o g   Can the child recognise the word from the sounds (phonemes)?
  • Then start with letter sounds s,a,t,p,I,n
  • Sound talk. Talk like a robot saying each sound in a word eg c a t  Can the child recognise it's cat?
