PSHE

At Sennen School we place a high priority on Personal, Social, Health and Emotion education. PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions to succeeding in their first job, PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.

We ensure that high quality, thought provoking sessions take place weekly in all classes using the Kapow scheme of work. The scheme incorporates all RSE objectives and these are built into the PSHE programme. Children keep a journal of their activities so that they can see the progress they have made.

Ground rules were decided by all classes before sessions started and are revisited regularly to help chidlren feel safe and confident to participate in lessons.

Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, who their trusted adults are, and what they can do if they feel they need to speak out.

All classes contain 'worry boxes' that are checked regularly and actions taken where needed.

How we support children with SEND in PSHE.

All children participate fully in PSHE lessons and those with SEND are supported by an extra adult, given extra time if needed or have some adapted resources where necessary, eg social stories, extra visuals, etc.  We also liaise with specialist teachers for advice on particular topics, eg SRE, to ensure children with SEND are supported in the most appropriate way.

What amendments are made to the subject in order to help children with SEND to achieve?

  • We have several TIS (Trauma Informed Schools) trained staff who are able to support children with SEND in PSHE lessons and also offer extra sessions as needed during the week.
  • A spiral curriculum (revisit and revise) - At the start of the lesson, children will be revisiting the vocabulary and keys facts you have learnt. This will give children with SEND more time and opportunities to understand the concepts and vital knowledge they need to access the learning.
  • Visual word mats - where appropriate we will create a visual word mat, social story or collage for your children with SEND.
